I’m back at Soul Cycle
Posted on | September 15, 2010 | No Comments
It’s when I’m in this class and I’m with any teacher that I realize what a phenomena it is. Somehow Soul Cycle has tapped into a crazy energy in the city of New York and the rich, famous and me – all go there to give it our all and set up our day, our life in a way that is powerful. It’s strange – I look around and everyone is in the zone.
The teacher is Sue – she’s good definitely – there is an edge to her definitely. Some people like this – I do most of the time but today I want to be whispered to not yelled at. She also outted someone for being pregnant – I actually liked that because I was feeling slightly guilty being in class, preggers and sweating like crazy.
You ALWAYS feel better leaving this class and you feel like and athlete. I’m so lucky that I have this fountain of energy – especially in this city. Soul Cycle – you are my yoga of spin!
Fly with Ariel

It’s funny when your yoga teacher is in capri pants – everything seems like a dance move. He forgot his pants so taught in a pair of cargo pants and a white tank. Why do I notice these things… maybe because he didn’t seem like a formal yoga teacher. I sort of felt like I was in his living room, hanging out and dancing. There is nothing at all wrong with any of this. His sequencing was really unique and cool – probably some of the coolest in the city. I really did feel as though I were dancing.
He also walked around a lot and gave everyone personal attention. He is a very cool and attentive teacher. It’s a hard class though so don’t go on a day where your energy is low. Go when you feel like dancing!
Yoga Pure Pam Reese – what a GURU
Posted on | September 3, 2010 | No Comments
Ok – I know I have to shake it up but there days whatever is easiest is what I go for. I’m now four and half months pregnant so I’m taking my classes as they come. Lucky for me – one of my classes was at PURE yoga with Pam Reese. There is something about the way she enters a room, talks to her students and of course teaches.
She does an hour vinyasa class with such creativity and originality that you feel as though you’ve never done yoga before but somehow have the tools to get through and follow her amazing clean and syncopated rhythm as a teacher.
If you haven’t taken her class – you really should. Again, it’s what you put onto the mat and into the practice that you take out to the world. Taking from Pam, yoga becomes a way of living. And in New York City in this INSANE summer heat – sometimes we need a few extra lessons on how to cope

Soul Cycle NYC Yoga on a Bike
Posted on | August 22, 2010 | No Comments
I’m back and this time I’m with who feels like a founder of this mind body spin thing… her name is Janet. I haven’t been on the bike in a while so when she says that there are moves for advanced students and moves for beginners – I’m not really sure where I fit in. I do know that I can’t just coast along in this class – no way – it’s hard core, intense and pushes all your buttons – just like every other class I go to at this studio.
I really like this teacher – she is a rebel, she is fun and she seems like she would be a good friend. I like that the class starts with us closing our eyes. For many reasons, this feels good. I don’t want anyone watching me. I don’t want to look at anyone… and I kind of feel like I forget how to do this thing. But as they say – it’s like riding a bicycle.
Soul Cycle has grown – you can feel it. It’s a big place now with lots of teachers, lots of schedules, lots of things going on.
After 45 minutes I really forget about all that other stuff and remember that how I am on the bike is how I am during my day. I gave it 100% so I’m excited to see what this day brings! First thing – breaky with my pal Kerry B!

PURE yoga New York Easy flow yoga
Posted on | August 20, 2010 | No Comments
It’s so great to practice – there is really nothing better in the world than a great yoga class. You breath, you flow, you move, you get related to your body and at the end you have a chance to relax into every efforts you’ve just put out. It’s very powerful.
I was so happy that my first class back in a while was with Victoria at PURE yoga for a Slow Flow. She is French, looks like a dancer and has a playful way about her when she teaches. Yoga is really a commitment of a relationship with the teacher and the other students. What I liked is that Victoria was in that relationship with us as soon as she stepped into the studio. She spoke to us like friends, played cool music and challenged the way that we looked at our practice.
An hour – brilliant. I truly love this practice.
Outdoor yoga – New York – lululemon
Posted on | August 18, 2010 | No Comments
Now these words are all coming to mean the same thing – that’s right. lululemon hosts tons of outdoor classes but the one on August 7th was very different. The venue was the same – the amazing Bryant Park but this time, it was for Salutation Nation – the entire nation practicing yoga at the same time. Such a cool concept and the teachers kept referencing it. They would say… “imagine your counterpart, right now all over the east coast getting down onto their mats and practicing”. I liked that thought.
The teachers were Matt and Dechen (Uma Thurman’s brother). Why I mention that I have no idea. It is kind of cool though only because she seems really cool. The class was hard and the teachers were amazing. They finished each other’s sentences and were hilarious. What I liked about their teaching was that they don’t take themselves too seriously. I think my favorite part was when Dechen was head banging while in Warrior 2 – I think Pearl Jam was playing.
Practicing yoga in the middle of New York City never gets tiring. It is a gift that I am so thankful for. I love knowing that it happens all over the city and that people everywhere are into it.
Mother nature cooperated… music rocked, teachers were amazing and the class was spectacular. What a lucky girl I am!
Sunrise Yoga – Reebok for the Stars

Oh my goodness – I am off my mark. I know. Don’t judge, there has been a LOT going on. More on that later but I’ve been out of the country and I’m OK with continuing and maybe just looking at things a little differently for the next little while. BUT that doesn’t mean that I will stop talking yoga, yoga, yoga in the best city in the world – that’s NEW YORK!
Imagine this – the top of the most exclusive club in NYC with one of the best yoga teachers around April Martucci. It’s 7am which at first I was bummed about – but it’s summer… it’s hot and the only time you can do ANYTHING is before the sun starts shining. So here I am with about 30 other yogis – checking out an amazing open level Vinyasa class – as we overlook the city. It is SO cool.
We flow and when I saw flow – I mean – my arms hurts after 10 minutes – I’ve missed you YOGA… and so has my body. I’m so glad I’m back and what a brilliant way to begin.
Thanks Reebok for putting this on and thanks April for making my foray back into the practice a seamless and beautiful one!
Jivamukti Yoga at PURE? Was that STING?
Posted on | July 14, 2010 | No Comments
It’s true – I took a Jivamukti class at PURE yoga – what a cool thing that they offer. I sort of forgot how cool Jiva can be and how beautifully it incorporates all of the elements of the yoga practice. No wonder STING loves it.
I find that I get caught up in the physical. How do I feel today? Should I conserve energy? Should I twist deeply? How long is the class? It’s amazing but at the same time – more mechanical than I sometimes need to be.
Then I’m in this class with a teacher named Nicole and she is everything yoga is. She is beautiful and open. We all sit together and she talks to us about the practice, the community we are, the lessons we can share and then she invites us into a song. Yup – that’s right – we are invited to sing and share our voices. She starts to sing and I’m blown away – what a gorgeous voice she has.
Then the physical begins and I’m really present. I’m elated by the together that I feel here in the room, in the moment. We do a lot of forward bending and Nicole reminds us of the humility of this action. I feel humble in this practice – and grateful.
It feels like a vinyasa class with really detailed and deep instruction. This class reminds me why I love the practice of yoga and why I love New York.
If you haven’t noticed – my posts lately have focused on PURE yoga – I really do think it has some of the best teachers in the city and it is so beautiful. You feel like you’re at a spa every time you go.
Thank you Nicole for your beautiful class and practice.
